What is the difference between UX vs. UI design?

Both user experience and user interface design compliment one other but they are distinctly different. UI design is often referred to as a subset of UX design, in the same way that UX design is a subset of CX design. UX and UI design are closely connected to create the best outcomes but they cover different aspects of design. Let’s look at a website as an example:

UI designers look at colours, shapes, fonts, buttons, icons, toggles, images, graphics, layouts and components. It’s all about defining the visual elements and patterns that the user interacts with. UX designers consider these elements also but in the context of their whole experience. UX designers rely heavily on customer research, market gaps and competitor analysis to think about the user journey. Where users land on the site, if it’s easy for them to navigate through the information and how to get them to take a desired action – from a user point of view.

So, how can UX help you as a business?

If UX focuses on the user, you might be wondering what benefits there are for your business? To our UX designers, it's a no brainer but for a business to succeed, understanding and designing for their audience is key. It’s important to invest the time to truly understand your users' needs, pain points, behaviours and thinking and to adjust your offering towards those insights. When you design your experience mindfully you create seamless and meaningful interactions between your users and what you’re trying to sell to them. Users care about their experience more than price (or any other factor), time spent toward creating a better experience increases your target audience’s trust, brand loyalty and conversions.

How can Honest Fox help improve your user experience?

We know how important UX design is for businesses' success. Plain and simple, we know it increases the chances of users purchasing what you have to offer. Not only that, it increases their chances of coming back again. Why? Because they had a more positive experience.

Our team of UX designers have plenty of experience and best practices to showcase that have proven to make a difference. Some UX methods we apply include:

  • Competitor analysis

  • Analytics and data review

  • User interviews and surveys

  • Content audit and heuristic reviews

  • User testing

  • User personas

  • Mental models and moodboards

  • Experience mapping

  • User stories and scenarios

  • Sitemapping

  • Wireframes and prototypes

UX vs. UI design – which one should you focus on?

Since UX and UI design go hand in hand, both can only work to their full potential with the other. Having a visual representation without a user-centric user journey in mind can’t promise to be successful. The other way round, a fantastic user experience concept without thoughtful UI design is just a skeleton without a skin.

Here’s the thing: while both elements are essential, we can help to analyse your individual situation and uncover the UX and UI opportunities for your business to tackle. In our experience, most of our clients already have an internal design team but often lack the process and skills needed to implement UX design effectively.

At Honest Fox, we like to take a close look at each of our clients’ unique offerings and using our expertise, draw out the aspects that will create the most value for you and your audience. No two businesses are the same.
